The South Coast Business Alliance (SCBA) has always believed that investing in our youth means investing in the future of our community. That’s why we’re proud to support the Dennison Memorial Community Center, a New Bedford institution that has been serving children and families in the city’s South End for over 150 years.

A Legacy of Support in the South End

Founded in 1868, Dennison began as a safe place for working-class immigrant families. Over time, it grew into what it is today: a full-service community hub where young people can learn, play, and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

From after-school tutoring to summer programs, creative arts, athletics, and childcare, Dennison makes sure that every child has access to opportunities, regardless of financial circumstances. Every program is free of charge, so all kids need to bring their energy and creativity.

Shared Mission, Shared Impact

Like Dennison, SCBA is dedicated to giving young people the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. Through events like New Bedford Oktoberfest and our Cinco de Mayo Golf Outing at LeBaron Hills, SCBA raises funds that go right back into the community. Over the years, we’ve donated nearly $1 million to local youth organizations, with Dennison being one of the organizations we’re most proud to stand behind.

Jim Mathes, CEO of the Dennison Memorial Community Center, has been a driving force in ensuring these programs continue to thrive. His leadership and commitment to the children of New Bedford perfectly align with SCBA’s mission to invest in the next generation.

Why Dennison Matters

We support Dennison because their work directly reflects what SCBA stands for:

  • Accessibility – Every child deserves a safe and supportive space, no matter their family’s financial situation.

  • Community Roots – Dennison has been a trusted neighbor in the South End for generations.

  • Proven Outcomes – By combining academics, recreation, and the arts, Dennison helps kids succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Building the Future Together

SCBA’s support of Dennison is more than a donation; it’s a partnership built on shared values and a shared vision for the South Coast. When we invest in youth programs like those at Dennison, we’re helping shape the leaders of tomorrow.

We’re honored to support the Dennison Memorial Community Center, under the leadership of CEO Jim Mathes, and the countless young people who walk through its doors every day. Together, we’re building a stronger, brighter future for New Bedford and the entire South Coast.
